MoMA PS1 is among the foremost art museums in the United States dedicated solely to contemporary art. It is in Court Square in Queens, New York City. Along with its exhibits, the museum also organizes events like the Sunday Sessions performance series, the Warm Up summer music series, and the Young Architects Program with the Museum of Modern Art. MoMA PS1 has been affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art since January 2000. According to 2013, the museum has a population of around 200,000 annually.
What would eventually become MoMA PS1 was founded in 1971 by Alanna Heiss 1971. It was formally known as The Institute for Art and Urban Resources Inc. It was a non-profit organization that was created to convert abandoned and unused structures in New York City into artist studios and exhibition spaces. H&A Queens Plumbing
Conscient of the fact it was the case that New York was a worldwide art center and acknowledging that traditional museums were not providing enough exhibition space for work that was specific to the site in 1971, Heiss formed an official alternative arts group with architect and theater critic Brendan Gill called The Institute for Art and Urban Resources and began to restore buildings which were abandoned inside New York City.
In 1976, Heiss established the P.S. 1. Contemporary Art Center in an abandoned Romanesque Revival public school building, dramatically increasing the capacity of the institution to show and create studios. The building, constructed in 1892, was the first publicly-owned school to be built inside Long Island City in Queens, NYC until 1963, when the First Ward school that it was located in was closed because of insufficient attendance. The building was turned into an industrial warehouse. In 1976, Heiss established the P.S. 1. Contemporary Art Center in an abandoned Romanesque Revival public school building, dramatically increasing the institute’s capacity for studios and exhibitions. The building, constructed in 1892, served as a school in Long Island City until 1963 when it was shut down. The First Ward school was located in was closed due to insufficient attendance. The building was demolished in 1963. The building was turned into an industrial storage space.
MoMA PS1 and the Museum of Modern Art officially ratified their partnership in January 2000. Queens, which includes MoMA PS1, which is home to the MoMA PS1 Building, has also backed the merger. MoMA’s partnership with MoMA PS1 aims to promote contemporary art and culture’s appreciation, enjoyment, and understanding to an expanding audience. The collaboration in exhibits, educational programs, and special projects allows both institutions to benefit from the strengths of each to build an entirely new dialogue between culture and society. Both institutions have merged their marketing for education, development, financial planning, and membership and development departments. To commemorate this 10th anniversary, the union between the previous P.S. 1. Contemporary Art Center and MoMA The museum was renamed MoMA PS1 in 2010.
